The Limits of Control
We studied the limits of metacognitive control... a bit of a Jim Jarmusch title, not of course by accident.
It's a subtle story, but one I like a lot... about how we can track when we need to do better, during perceptual decision-making, and how we put in an effort to do so, but then not manage to improve performance. It's a double punch: we feel the stress, we try something, and yet it doesn't work. Yikes. We would have been better off not caring.
I'll call it one of the little nightmares of goodwill. Maybe I feel like writing a novel about it. Maybe I'm already working on it.
